Niger earmarks N5b for new NYSC permanent camp

Announces N200,000 bonus for corps members
Niger State government has earmarked N5 billion for the construction of a new National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) permanent orientation camp.

Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago made the announcement at the official opening of the 2024 Batch “B” Stream 1 orientation course and swearing in of 1,600 corps members deployed to the state, held at the NYSC orientation camp at Paiko in Paikoro council area of the state yesterday.

He said, in the interim, the state government would build more toilets, “as we will as well drill bore holes in the temporary orientation camp to make it habitable for the corps members.”

Bago, who was special guest at the event, commended the corps members for choosing to serve in the state, donating one trailer of rice and 20 cows to them.

He announced a N200,000 bonus for the serving corps members.

The governor said: “We have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Youths and Sports and the NYSC DG on how we can propel agriculture on the NYSC scheme,” pointing out that “as far as you want to go into farming such as aqua culture, animal husbandry, then you will earn N500,000 monthly. My dear NYSC members, this is an opportunity for you.”

He lauded President Bola Tinubu for supporting him to make sure that agriculture revolution is piloted in Niger State.

The governor reassured security, safety and welfare of all corps members serving in the state.

Earlier, the Minister of Youths Development, Dr Jamila Bio Ibrahim, announced a ground-breaking initiative by the Federal Government to empower 5,000 NYSC members with up to N10 million eacch for entrepreneurial ventures upon completion of service.

NYSC’s Director General, Brigadier General Yushau Dogara Ahmed, lauded the governor for approving the construction of a new permanent orientation camp.

While commending the governor for his gestures, he noted that such would support and ginger corps members immensely.

State Coordinator of the scheme, Mrs Olayinka Abdulwahab, revealed that as part of their participation in the laudable human and capital developmental programmes of the Umar Bago’s administration, especially the Green Economy Project, the state NYSC management has deployed close to 100 corps members to serve in the Niger Foods project.

She commended the corps members for their patriotism, as demonstrated through acceptance of their deployment to the state.

She advised them to avoid using social media for spreading fake news, fuelling hatred and other negative purposes.

The Chief, Justice Halima Ibrahim Abdulmalik, thereafter, administered oath of allegiance on the corps members.
